Commercial vehicles excluded from new plate requirements in Ontario
Some good news for those in Ontario. The Ontario government announced that they are doing away with licence plate stickers for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, and mopeds. Sorry commercial drivers, the new plate sticker rules do not apply to you.
Commercial vehicles will still need to make sure their plate stickers are up to date and paid for.
Passenger plate stickers gone as of March 13th
Plate stickers for passenger vehicles will not be needed as of March 13, 2022. An added plus is that the Ontario government will issue refunds for licence plate renewal fees.
Do note though that the refund will not be available for vehicles registered to companies or businesses.
Northern Ontario residents previous had to pay $60 per year, and Southern Ontario had to shell out $120 per year.
Be sure to get your refund
However, to receive your refund you must do two things by March 7, 2022:
- Update the address on your vehicle permit or drivers licence if needed (as this is where your refund will be sent)
- 2) pay any outstanding fees, fines, or tolls.
You can visit Service Ontario to take care of that.
Premier Doug Ford said that this new initiative is to help “make life more affordable”.
Along with the removal of plate sticker fees, Ontario will be removing the tolls fees from Highways 412 and 418 (the Highway 407 express is still a toll route).
