The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued new regulatory guidance regarding the use of electronic hours of service look books that are becoming popular among drivers who use smart phones, tablets or computers.

Previously if a driver used these types of log books they were required to print them onto paper and physically sign them in order for them to comply with FMCSA regulation.  This new guidance now allows drivers to use digital signatures for logs instead.

If you use one of these to do your logs on you can not sign them electronically

What this means is as long as the software provides a method of electronically signing the log books there is no need to print them at inspections as officers will now be able to look at tablets or smart phones to verify hours of service.

Drivers must still have on hand the previous seven days worth of electronically signed logs on hand and officers may still require driver to provide printed copies of logs at their discretion, drivers must be given an opportunity to print the current and previous seven days worth of logs if required.
