The insurance industry is moving towards stricter record keeping in regards to commercial drivers.  Many insurance companies in Canada are now asking for more details  about your insurance history before you are put on a new policy.   We have seen longer delays in getting drivers approved as new hires.  As well drivers who decide to open their own companies are facing increased insurance premiums due to the lack of validated history as a commercial driver.  As insurance premiums rise anything that you can do to cut costs is certainly worth while.

Drivers should keep record of what insurance policy they are driving under.

To help you out everyone  should start maintaining their own records so they have them ready when needed in the future.  Items drivers should start to keep track of, most of which is found in the permit book given to you by your company:

  •     Name of carrier your working for
  •     Date employment  started and ended
  •     Commodities hauled
  •     Name of insurance company
  •     Policy number
  •     Any claims
  •     Letter of Experience from insurance company

Letters of Experience can be obtained directly from the insurance company if you have the name of the company and policy number.  After you leave a carrier you should call up the insurance company that your former company used and get your letter of experience as soon as possible.

We have found that some carriers give drivers a hard time when former drivers ask for insurance history information.  This makes getting old information difficult if not impossible to get later on.  This is why it’s important for you to start keeping your own records.
