If the heat didn’t give it away the calendar does, it’s summer time!  Along with pleasant thoughts of vacations, going to the beach or cottage also comes the unpleasant thought of taxes.  Yes with summer also comes Heavy Vehicle Use Tax or Form 2290 filing.

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

Carriers are reminded that if they use public roadways in the United States and they operate a qualified motor vehicles they must file and remit Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes to the IRS.   Form 2290 along with payment must be filed by August 31, 2012 for all qualified motor vehicle on their fleet as of July 1, 2012.

Qualified motor vehicles are vehicles over the registered gross weight of 55, 000 lbs and travel on public highways in the United States.  For vehicles that travel less then 5, 000 miles on a public highway they can apply for a tax credit.

The tax is based on the weight of the vehicle and date it comes into service.  Any vehicle coming into service after July 1st will be prorated.

It is reported that in 2008 the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax contributed over a billion dollars towards improving public highways.
